Redrawer - Needed for most projects
Typesetter - Needed for various projects
Translator - Needed for: Denpa Kyoushi, Say I Love You, Kimi ni Todoke
Proofreader - Needed for: Kurosagi, Joujuu Senjin!! Mushibugyo
Raw Provider: The person who debinds volumes/magazines and scans the pages. The volumes or magazines will either be sent to the RP or the RP will purchase the volumes themselves and then be reimbursed by the group.
Translator: A person who reads the raw scans and can accurately translate the text and SFX not only from one language to another, but from the images into a text-based script.
Proofreader: This person takes the translated script and corrects any grammatical errors or awkward wordings to ensure that the script is legible and makes sense in the new language.
Proofreader Test: PR Test 01 [Shoujo] / PR Test 02 [Shounen]
Cleaner: **This job requires the use and a vague knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.** The cleaner takes the raw scans and “cleans” them by straightening the page, adjusting the levels (the white and blacks on the page), and removing any text from the native language. Knowledge in using Topaz is required for cleaning magazine raws.
Typesetter: **This job requires the use and a vague knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.** Once the script has been OK’d by a proofreader and the pages have been cleaned, the typesetter goes to work. A typesetter will take the words from the finished script and place them in text boxes on the cleaned pages, arrange them, fiddle with the fonts, and generally make sure that words being put on the page look nice and come as close to the original text fonts/feeling as possible. To help with that, many groups have font lists that can be used as a guide when trying to decide on what font to use where.
Redrawer: **This job requires the use and a vague knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.** A redrawer is a person who is assigned to literally redraw portions of a cleaned page. So when you see text over someone’s hand or hair but you don’t see Japanese characters beneath the English words – you know a redrawer has done their job. <3 This person also combines two-page spreads into one large page.
Quality Checker: After everyone listed above has completed their tasks, the QCer steps in to make sure that the chapter is ready for release. This job can be divided into Editing and Script quality checking, with one person checking the cleaned pages/typesetting and another person making sure the script has been proofed properly and/or the translation is still accurate. When there’s only person doing the quality check, that person will check both the editing and the script.
Credits for the wonderful descriptions for each role goes to one of our former staff members, Raj Nosam.
